The Baking Mystery
As the school bell rang, Miss Carson waved goodbye. Sophie Coleman picked up all her supplies, it was a big holiday. Summer Break! She was going to 5th grade, Sophie was a great detective and helped with cases. She knew that there was a baking competition each year in Summer. Her friend Naomi was competing with the most talented bakers ever! The next day she went to the competition, the bakers had 3 hours to prepare a dish for the judges to try and observe. She went to Naomi and she saw she was just standing there, her mouth was wide open and she was looking horrified at the floor. There Sophie saw a 5 layered cake with a smashed statue on top with some icing everywhere. “What happened?” Asked Sophie.
Naomi looked up at her like she was trying to say something but she couldn’t. Sophie ran down the hall and almost bumped into one of the judges, Miss Marple. “Something just happened in Naomi’s part of the kitchen!”
They both ran back to see Naomi still standing there with tears rolling out her eyes and dropping onto the floor. “Hey” Said Sophie “We’ll fix it”
Sophie grabbed her sparkly light blue notebook and took her favorite pen. “Details anything?” She questioned
“Well, I went to get more supplies and I just saw my cake there on the floor.”
“Was there anything unusual at the crime scene?”
“Not exactly…..but I did see a piece of hair that looked like the janitor's and some teeth marks on it”
“Thanks” Replied Sophie
“Anyone you might suspect?”
“Well maybe the janitor, Mrs. Doug (She always wants to win) and Beatrice”. Replied Naomi
“You start making your desert and not leave again...get all the supplies you need.”
Sophie first grabbed all the evidence and put it in a plastic bag. She went to meet the janitor but he wasn’t there. She searched the whole place but didn’t find him. “Hey Miss Marple do you know where the janitor is?”
“He went home because he was sick” She replied
“Around what time?”
“Around 11 am”
But the crime was around 2:00, no way he had done it. Sophie crossed him out on his list. She rolled her eyes when she read the next suspect’s name. She put on a fake smile and went to Mrs. Doug. “Hi Mrs. Doug!”
She looked at Mrs. Doug’s hair, she had curly brown hair. The hair from the crime scene was straight and it’s color was black. “Never mind Mrs. Doug, bye!”
Forget about Beatrice, Sophie thought. Beatrice had blond sleek and shiny hair, they had been friends at the beginning of 4th grade, but Beatrice took all the spotlight from Sophie and claimed it was her who had done it, she did that with Sophie’s first case, so they turned out to be rivals. She crossed her off, she took out the see through bag and remembered the teeth marks on the cake. Checking all these peoples teeth would take ages! She came up with the idea and asked the judges if she could do something on the stage. Everyone was there and she started doing a funny dance. Everyone was laughing and Sophie was able to study their teeth. Just then a dog ran up on stage, grabbed the bag and threw it on the floor. Sophie ran down the stage looking worried, but everything was okay. She searched for her tool to pick the evidence up off the floor but couldn’t find it. She decided to touch it and put it back. Suddenly when grabbed the piece of hair, black stained on her hand, she smelled it and it was paint! She studied the hair closely and it was gray hair. She knew who it was! And ran back on stage to say the case was closed. “Dear ladies and gentlemen! A clever crime has been held at this very event, one of the participant’s desert has been ruined by a culprit at her part of the kitchen and it was none other than... Jack Henry!”
One of the judges motioned to speak but Jack stopped them. “How can you know I did it? I am a judge and I love this competition!”
“But each year one of the best baker’s treats in this competition gets sabotaged!”
“Listen people, I have evidence, I saw black hair at the crime scene and it was black. It was painted in black! Actually it was gray, and everyone look at Jack Henry’s hair. It is gray and the hair was straight, Hair doesn’t fall out like that right? It gets all curly and falls out, that is when I realized it was cut and a setup to get the detective off track! Now about the teeth marks look at Jack’s teeth now look at the one I have here, they match! All the evidence points to him!”
People gasped and whispered to one and other “Please guys! I didn’t do it, don't believe what she says!”
“Fine by me, please turn on the security cameras for everyone to see!”
One police officer turned on the security camera and stood next to Jack Henry to make sure he didn’t leave. It was Jack Henry! He bit into the cake and threw it on the floor. The crowd started yelling and Naomi marched up to him. “You so called judge think you can do whatever you want! I will make sure you never get a job and become famous! You are a con artist! Why’d you do that anyway? After you say it, go away and never show me your face again!”
“Fine I did it and did because I….”
Sophie cut him off and said “Because he didn’t want you to break his cooking record!”
Miss Marple came to Naomi and asked “Would you do the honors?”
“I would love to!” Shouted Naomi
Naomi got hold of Jack Henry’s gold star, yanked it, grabbed him by the collar and threw him out of the building and she slammed the door after him. Naomi thanked Sophie and grabbed her new same kind of cake and went up stage.
“3rd Place goes to Mr. Edward! 2nd Place goes to Miss Sarah! 1st Place goes to Naomi Poole!”
Naomi squealed and covered her mouth as she ran to get her prize. “Congratulations to all the winners! See you all next year!”
Sophie smiled to herself, another case had been solved in Houston, Texas.
